My wife and I recently had our wedding reception at Ghan House and we could not have been more happy every single aspect of Ghan House. The food was beautiful - so good that our friends and family are still talking about it two weeks later, with several commenting that it was by far the best food that they had experienced at a wedding. We had an accident with transporting our cake on the day before our wedding and the chefs re-iced it! It looked fantastic and we were very happy and relieved. The service was also fantastic. All of the staff were attentive but not intrusive, calm, patient, and professional and we felt confident that everything would happen when it needed too (and it did). The owner, Paul, was also great and his sense of humour and forethought were well appreciated. We loved the layout of the house - it felt homely and the different rooms and bar allowed one to enjoy different aspects of the day and it was very social. There was no issue with us having traditional music in the day, a band after dinner and more loud music late into the night. We considered several venues for our reception but we are so happy that we chose Ghan House. The day really could not have gone any better than it did and we will definitely be returning for dinner ~ Stefan and Una
We recently had our civil partnership at Ghan House. It really was superb in every way. Each time we visited the house while planning for our day Paul, both Sarah's and Aoife were extremely helpful. All of our questions and concerns were met with gentle reassurance. We also felt that they listened and helped us plan a day which we hoped would feel like a big party. The house itself looked fantastic on the day. The ceremony in the house was informal and relaxed surrounded by friends and family. A definite highlight for ourselves and our guests was the drinks reception followed by speeches on the lawn. We worried that perhaps the day would feel disjointed as we ate in separate rooms, however this did not in any way affect the atmosphere and ensured that the quality of food and excellent service was maintained throughout the meal. Likewise the band playing in an upstairs room with the band and the drawing rooms downstairs meant that guests could dance, mingle and relax as they wished. The dance floor never emptied and we definitely had the party we wanted. A big thank you to the best barman!!!!! Nothing but good feedback from all our guests. This is certainly an amazing venue ~ Siobhan & Denise
Our daughter was married in Carlingford on September 5th, and had the reception at Ghan House. As her parents, we were concerned about her choice of venue. We worried that the house was small, and it might not work as a wedding venue. We were proved wrong. From our arrival there on Thursday afternoon, until our departure on Sunday evening, we were happy, relaxed, and had our every need attended to. One guest summed it up by saying that it was like a great house party, and that’s what it felt like, for us. The bedrooms in the house are beautiful, and the annex rooms looked very comfortable. Breakfast was great each morning, and we had one big table for all of our party, which gave us a sense of occasion each day. Having the bar and sitting room on the ground floor, and the dance floor upstairs, worked well, as those who liked a break from the music, had a comfortable place to sit and chat. All we wanted at the end of the day was to know, that our daughter, and her new husband, would have happy memories of their most special day, and they certainly have. A special word of thanks to Olavi who was always so pleasant to us all, and couldn’t do enough for us, and to the chef, for the wonderful meal ~ Michelle & Barry
I was fortunate enough to have my Wedding Blessing/reception at Ghan House (gorgeous Georgian house set in the most preserved medieval village in Europe in the coastal hamlet of Carlingford Lough) I could not have been any happier. The staff at Ghan House were so amazing ensuing that everything was perfect, attention to detail was superb no stone was left unturned. A special shout out to Sarah M, Sarah Luckey and Orla who helped me plan and orchestrate the Wedding reception of my dreams. Everything was seamless. My husband and I got married quietly in our parish in Boston a few weeks beforehand but given that I am originally from Ireland and hence all my family are ensconced here I wanted to have my Wedding reception in Ireland and give my family a party and what a party it turned out to be! All my guests are still raving about it. Ghan House is exquisite with an abundance of gorgeous furnishings & antiques, cosy bar for guests to mingle and beautiful manicured lawns and the Slieve Foy & St John's Abbey rising majestically providing a wonderful background canopy for Wedding photographs etc. I hired a harpist from Newry called Sharon Carroll and her accompanying guitarist and I whole heartedly recommend her as well. Sharon was outstanding, a true master at her skill, definitely lending a touch of class and elegance to our special Day. They played throughout the Wedding Blessing and whilst we had champagne and canapés on the lawn and briefly then in the drawing room when we were seated for dinner. The food was exceptional. Ghan House has consistently collected many accolades for award winning cuisine and delighted that it did not disappoint.. truly exceptional. .Service was impeccable and waiters constantly filling up wine glasses much to the guests delight! I absolutely highly recommend Ghan House as a Wedding venue in the highest form possible. It definitely proved to be a huge hit with all my guests with close proximity into the village (walking distance) I can honestly say I was in my element surrounded by family and all my loved ones in such a unique venue! Truly stunning! Thank you so much to all the staff at Ghan House and to Paul the owner of this wonderful establishment who was such a delight to work with. Congratulations for running such a wonderful Inn and I wish you continued success for years to come!! Trust me you will definitely not regret having your Wedding reception here or any other function. They aim to please and it shows in spades! ~ Shireen & George
Myself and my Husband got married in Ghan House. We were recommended it by a friend of the family, and straight away we both fell in love with the house and its beautiful location. We booked it exclusively for the day and stayed the night before and after with our guests. The staff were brilliant from day one, Sarah, Orla and Paul couldn’t have been more helpful. They made our decisions and planning easy, replying to every query and change promptly. On the day, we were extremely happy with how everything went. We had a humanist ceremony in the garden, the sun shone and it felt like a fairy tale. We had 40 guests, including several children and toddlers, the staff couldn’t have done enough, their personalities and professionalism throughout the day was amazing. All our guests raved about the food and atmosphere. In the evening, we had another 80 guests arrive for drinks, dancing and buffet. All great comments about the food and setting again. We were initially worried about the extra guests fitting into the house, but having the whole house and gardens meant all our guest were free to roam and everyone was very comfortable. Throughout our three night stay Paul was wonderful with all the family, young and old. We couldn’t thank the Ghan House enough for making our day so special ~ Aine & Stephen
A perfect wedding
The moment we set foot in Ghan House we fell in love immediately with its homely and welcoming atmosphere. The furniture, wall coverings and ornaments in every room matched perfectly the Georgian house and you get the distinct impression that everything is as it was when the house was built. The food on the day was superb, especially the Cooley Beef. Ghan House was absolutely perfect for our wedding and if we could, we do it all again! All the staff helped to make our day very very special and we left after an extended stay having made new friends ~ Miriam & Adrian
Excellent Wedding Venue
We recently had our wedding at Ghan House and it was the best decision we could have made. The food and venue on the day was absolutely fantastic and slickly organised, it was like a giant house party. Everyone had a great time, it was the perfect balance with a nice relaxed environment with a beautiful building, gardens and setting. For those looking for a special, intimate venue for a wedding, we cant recommend it enough! ~ Brendan & Majella
Wedding of our dreams
We recently got married in Ghan House and I honestly could not fault the place. They did so much to help make our day truly memorable. Everything down to the table settings, the food, the rooms, the drink, the service I could go on all day. It really was a very special day and a lot of it was down to all the staff there in Ghan House. They are a credit to the House
Fantastic Wedding Experience Thank YOU
Our day was fantastic, our pictures incredible and the whole affair one to remember for all the right reasons. All our friends have assured us that it was one of the best weddings that they have ever been to because we had the run of the whole house and it wasnt a boring hotel. The food was excellent, served politely and promptly with no overt fuss being made so we could get on with eating and enjoying our day. If you are having a wedding in Ireland and you dont want to have the same thing as everyone else in a hotel function room then Ghan House is a place you must consider. for the location, service , organisation, family atmosphere and great experience its a must see for your consideration. Thank you so much Ghan House, you made a special occasion even better!! ~ Emma and Tayo Idowu
Perfect wedding venue
We celebrated our daughters wedding in Ghan house on June 2nd with 110 guests. Champagne, Guinness and charcuterie selection on Ghan house lawn with jazz musicians playing in the background. Meal served inside in three beautiful drawing rooms. Food excellent and in abundance. House buzzing with people mingling throughout from the cosy bar to the comfortable lounges out onto the candle lit lawns and by the pond. House rang with laughter and fun. We felt like lords of the manor. We stayed up to see the sunrise over Carlingford Bay. Wonderful venue, unforgettable memories, Would highly recommend it for a wedding ~ Marie & Steven, June 2011. 110 guests
Amazing, intimate wedding experience!
Got married in Ghan House with a party of 57 guests and it was a truly amazing experience. The house and setting is charming and intimate and all our family and friends were impressed with the location and accommodation. The staff were most helpful and obliging and contributed greatly in making our wedding day run so smoothly. We had dinner in the beautiful drawing room, then moved to another room for an intimate gig with traditional Irish music before rounding up the evening in the intimate bar downstairs with another musician. Couldn't recommend it highly enough
Both Robert and I just wanted to thank you so much for allowing us to enjoy one of the most special days of our lives. Our wedding was fabulous. Everything was so organised, the venue and setting is beautiful, the food delicious, accommodation amazing. Service so professional and everyone was kind and wonderful. Everyone had a fabulous day. Everything was just perfect, I would not change one moment. Thank you so much ~ Charlene and Robert
We recently got married in Ghan House with a small group of friends there with us and a 2 yr old running around. We will never forget it as the whole team of staff could not have tried any more to make it a special day for us. The hotel main areas and the bedrooms were so intimate and added to the specialness of the day. The food was excellent and the whole air to the place led out whole party to promise to return....we loved it loved it loved it...couldn't recommend it higher
We got married in the heritage centre behind Ghan House and used Ghan for the wedding reception and sit down dinner and party for 104 people. Their staff were willing, friendly and welcoming and everything we had agreed with Ghan was delivered to order on the day. If you're looking for a wedding venue that is relaxed, intimate, welcoming, civilised and gives your guests a sense of a private house party with very good food - then I think Ghan is one of the best options on the island. We didn't want a formal Hotel wedding and in our search we looked at numerous alternatives - from Ballymaloe in Cork to Rathmullan in Donegal. Ghan House has charm in abundance and provides a comfortable, relaxing and very enjoyable experience. My husband and I owe Ghan House and its staff a special debt of gratitude for making our wedding day a magical event ~ Sharon & John
Myself and my now husband had our wedding in the Ghan House in Carlingford on the 29th December. To say the service was second to none would be an understatement! The attention to detail by all the staff was astounding. The food was exceptional, the ambience was stunning and everyone commented on the beautiful and exceptionally spacious rooms. I could not recommend the Ghan House highly enough, they made our day so so memorable!! x
Great service, fantastic food, stunning location
We held our wedding at Ghan House in December 2010. The service and attention was first class, the food was fantastic (especially the Cooley beef) and the venue and location are stunning. I would recommend this venue very highly - visit, speak to the staff and make your own mind up. The venue is, of course, a historic Georgian house so if you want a modern hotel this may not be for you
Lovely country house in Carlingford with fantastic views of the Lough and the Mourne mountains. A lovely house with great food ideal for a family wedding
Perfect Venue for a Small Wedding Reception
We had a small wedding reception (45 guests in total) consisting of a champagne reception on the lawns, followed by dinner in the upstairs drawing room. Everything about our whole wedding experience with Ghan House was positive. The food was sublime of course, but this was only one element of the whole experience which Ghan House created for us. You will be spoiled for choice for photo locations, both around Ghan House itself and in the immediately adjacent town, abbey and beach. We would highly recommend Ghan House as a venue for a very special wedding reception. You will be delighted with the choice
A wedding just the way we wanted it!
We got married in Carlingford in July and had our reception at Ghan House. We had about 60 guests and the venue was perfect for that size wedding. The planning process was very easy - any request we made was agreed to, and they gave us good ideas along the way. Especially liked that they were very flexible about our wishes - after many different venues made it sound like they dictated the wedding day schedule and scope, not the bride and groom. The bride had a very relaxed morning as the staff took care of everything. The food was amazing, and the dining room was set up just as we wished. It was great to have the whole place to ourselves, and all the guests had a great time
Most Perfect Wedding venue 10 out of 10
Ghan House's staff were absolutely lovely. Overall the feeling among the staff is completely relaxed yet super organized and always on the ball. Sarah from front of house decorated the rooms most beautifully with sheer attention to detail. Food was stunning! Cooked to perfection absolutely delicious. If you are after a truly amazing wedding venue Ghan House is top of the list. Intimate, charming, cozy and extremely relaxed exuding charm and oodles of character. What a fantastic and memorable day!!! Ghan House we thank you

Accommodation & Restaurant
My wife and I stayed here just after Christmas as a get-away for our wedding anniversary. The whole place is a lovely mix of the classical and the contemporary. Old world charm with modern comforts. The cuisine is excellent and would be hard to criticise in any way by even the most discerning palate. Staff equally and pleasant, warm and always helpful. Only complaint is if you've ever tried to book. It is so popular that availability can be a problem, but then again, this is to be expected when you're seeking this sort of quality.
The meal had been anticipated for several weeks as a special birthday treat. We were not disappointed! We each went for the mid-week tasting menu which had six perfectly sized courses, and a bottle of wine, suggested by the waiter, to accompany it. The cod and lamb courses were exquisitely cooked and presented. We enjoyed the cooling sorbet and a deliciously decadent dessert followed by speciality coffees( not included in price) The total was €91 which for the quality of the food was excellent value. The service was all we could have wished for as you would expect in a venue of this quality. We will certainly be returning!!
It was such a pleasure to stay in Ghan House in mid November. My friend hired a private dining room for Saturday evening and we stayed overnight for her 50th Birthday celebration. The atmosphere is relaxed and Paul and his team made us very welcome and saw to all our varied needs late into the early hours of the morning at the same time managing to be unobtrusive. The food was excellent with lovely touches such as warm home baked bread and freshly made scones for afternoon tea. The rooms in the main house have unique features and in the annex are comfortable with lovely views of the mountains and overlook the cottage gardens. The log fires enticed us to relax in the lounge all weekend, but the draw of the beautiful scenery of the Cooley mountains saw some of us walking up the hills, some of us shopping and some of us having beauty treatments - so something for everyone in this ancient walled town. A stroll along the Lough side on Sunday morning before a tasty breakfast made a memorable stay and I would highly recommend Ghan House for a pampered stay.
I just spent my 50th birthday weekend at Ghan house with 20 of my best friends and family and it was just superb in every possible way. I already loved the hotel as have had romantic stays there in the past. But as a venue for my special weekend it surpassed all expectations. We took all the rooms in the hotel so I felt like we owned the place. The wonderful staff only appear when you need them the rest of the time they seem to fade into the background and let you have the run of the place. The breakfasts were great and sitting round in the lounge tending to the fires while chatting was the perfect pastime in between exploring Carlingford. I had booked the hotel a year ago and the staff ensured all the planning was easy and fun. And after all that we checked out in amazement at what good value for money it was. Massive thanks to Paul, Orla and the two Sarahs...all my friends plan to come back and we will be back soon.
We have eaten here a few times and usually go A la Carte but we decided to try the tasting menu. The food is always delicious with top-class ingredients but the tasting menu really displays the creativity and brilliance of the chef. The suckling pig and the salmon with beetroot will live long in memory! It was great value and a real treat. Also, for anyone who hasn't been to Ghan House, I think it has a wonderful romantic sort of atmosphere - the old dining room, views across Carlingford Lough, candlelight. Thanks also to the waiting staff who in our experience are very professional. Plus once you book your table, you have it for the night. A very relaxed sort of place.
What a great experience. I cannot recommend Ghan House highly enough. The 6 course tasting menu is a delight - and great value too. Sitting looking out over Carlingford Lough with the sun shimmering whilst sampling a variety of beautiful dishes was pure bliss. If you visit Carlingford you really must dine here
You know when you watch those high-end cookery programmes and the judges speak of layers of flavour and taste? Well every course at Ghan House is like that. Unreal food. Braised beef cheek that could be eaten with a spoon should I have wanted to, suckling pig that fell apart, taste sensations like a cucumber and pineapple salsa and later a lime and ginger sorbet. My companion and I spent all night swapping morsels from plate to plate, each one better than the other. Wine not at all expensive, friendly, attentive but not over-fussy staff. I absolutely loved it and cannot wait to return.
My partner and I spent 2 nights in Ghan House recently. We really enjoyed our stay and could not fault this wonderful place in any way. Our room in the main house was full of olde world charm and the food was top notch! I really enjoyed my steak, it was just the way I like it and my partner raved about the belly pork. We really enjoyed our stay and will certainly return for the food, the homely atmosphere and the wonderful feel of this place very soon.
We based ourselves here whilst golfing in County Louth and were not disappointed. Ghan House is superb with superb rooms. The food (breakfast & dinner) is of the highest quality & standard. The staff are very accommodating and friendly and northing could be too much trouble. This is a beautiful spot and I would love to go back another time.
We recently hired one of the function rooms at Ghan house for a birthday celebration. The room was set up beautifully, and the meal was fantastic! We have heard nothing but positive comments from those invited!! We would highly recommend Ghan House to anyone for a similar function!
We ate a mid-week menu at Ghan House. We walked by and more or less spontaneously booked a table for later the same evening. It was a Monday and no need to book - unfortunately actually, because the food, the atmosphere and the service was so good so the place should be packed. We were very impressed and definitely want to come back next time we visit Carlingford.
Stayed two nights for our wedding anniversary. Amazing food, really delicious, fine dining with excellent choices. Room with old roll top bath was delightful. All mod cons but with old world feel too. Friendly, helpful staff just add to the ambience."
My husband and I stumbled upon Ghan House by chance and what a treat lay in store. A log fire and comfortable armchairs and sofas greet you as you enter Ghan House. Next to the entrance area there is a cosy little bar area where you can sit down and enjoy an aperitif. You can’t help but feel that you are in for a treat. A tasting menu conjures up a picture of small sample portions to showcase what you might have if you selected from the main dinner menu. The tasting menu at Ghan House offered portion sizes that would be very acceptable as part of a regular dinner menu. We are both keen cooks and marvelled at the plates of food as they arrived. They were exquisitely presented and the food was of the highest quality, demonstrating the skills and attention to detail of a most accomplished chef. This rates amongst one of the best meals I have ever had in a restaurant. And what amazing value. Hurry along to see for yourself."
We wanted somewhere special for a family gathering. Ghan House did not disappoint. The food was amazing, everyone loved it; It was like being a guest on Masterchef! The welcome was warm and wonderful, like a home away from home. Menu choices were excellent. There was something to suit the taste of all four generations at our gathering. Evening was so enjoyable, it will never be forgotten.
We have had several very happy stays in Ghan House and this one-nighter met our usual high expectations. Great welcome, lovely, interested staff. Super bedroom with view over the Lough. Magic dinner. Just what we wanted.
I went here with some colleagues and didn't know what to expect. A couple of members of the group had been here before and loved it. We turned up to a very welcoming looking building (looked like a grand home, rather than a posh sterile restaurant). We started off with a drink at the bar in the lounge area. Lovely and cosy with wine aplenty! We then moved upstairs where we were greeted with the magnificent smell of bread (they bake their own bread!). We had the 6 course taster menu, which was honestly one of the best meals I have ever had! The portion size was perfect and the food tasted absolutely splendid!
Myself and my wife have been to Carlingford many times over the years but have never visited Ghan House for a meal. The building has an old world character and lovely grounds. The menu gave us a very good choice and everyone totally enjoyed ALL the food, starters, main and especially desert. Compliments to Chef. Our waiter was polite and courteous and attentive. The other staff we encountered were also courteous. Would revisit again. Many thanks for a lovely meal.
Wonderful period Georgian country house in a quiet beautiful setting! We arrived on a cold rainy night without reservations and were delighted by the warm reception and beautiful surroundings. Things are very comfortable and the staff was extremely responsive and helpful. Breakfast was in the former ballroom and the food hearty and varied. Great value and wonderful. Don't expect things to be "plastic perfect" this place is about style, charm and character.
Stayed for a night midweek - got a lovely room with a great view of the lough. Superb dinner in the very pretty dining room with great service. The house is literally right in the village so it's very easy to take a stroll in for drink/ dinner or to walk to any of the loop walks around Slieve Foy. Couldn't recommend the house enough for location, ambience, charm, food and hospitable staff and owners.
Myself and my sister took my mum and aunt here as a birthday treat. We loved the big old house and were made feel very welcome. They put us in the two best rooms in the house and the four poster beds and bathrooms were top notch. The food was delicious - we stayed for an evening meal and breakfast. Lots of home made breads, pesto, jam and the main courses were lovely."
Loved this beautiful Country house...central location, but so quiet and fab breakfast! Stayed in the little single room fit for a china doll, but was very happy there :)"
Just back from a lovely weekend stay at Ghan House and we couldn't have had a better experience. Stayed in the main house, the room was spacious but cosy and warm. It's an old Edwardian home and is decorated in line with that era but in our room there was a flat screen tv and Ipod docking station (if you're into that!). A nice touch by the owners - they have music playing in your room as you arrive and little handmade biscuits. We also had a lovely en-suite bathroom with a cast iron bathtub and a separate power shower. Views out to the bay and a short hop to the local pubs and restaurants - a perfect location. And their reputation for food is well deserved - local produce and fab presentation but most of all you can really relax and enjoy your meal, there's no rush on tables.
This place made me feel so relaxed and comfortable the moment I stepped through the front door into the large hall which had a lovely open fire burning brightly and this feeling lasted throughout our weekend stay. Breakfast menu was extensive and the homemade muesli was delicious. The dinner menu was interesting and food very tasty. Bedrooms were tastefully furnished and roomy in the main house where we stayed. Loved the shower. I have only been in Carlingford briefly once before and was surprised to find so many good shops and friendly pubs/restaurants and lots of historical buildings. A gem of a place, well worth a stay and we intend to return.
Just home after spending the weekend at Ghan House, celebrating a friends birthday. We stayed in the main house, our whole party was accommodated here and it was great to be all in the one place. The fire was burning in the hallway and when we arrived at our rooms, there was lovely relaxing music playing and the beds were so comfy looking we immediately felt at home. Bathrooms complete with power shower, were clean and spacious. The furniture suited the ambience of the house perfectly. Location is superb, just a couple of minutes walk from the town and the breakfasts and evening meal were superbly cooked and served. Staff were lovely, so friendly and nothing was a bother to them. All in all a great weekend, one which we will remember for a long time to come. Thanks Paul and staff for making my friend's birthday so special. Hopefully we will be all back again soon.
Travelled with friends for an overnight, Bed, Breakfast and Evening Meal. Arrived early afternoon, fire was lit in the hall which was really charming. We had Bedroom no. 4 which was gorgeous- big roll top bath and walk in shower in the bathroom. After a wander around Carlingford we came back to the house and had drinks in the sitting room where they lit the fire for us it was pleasant and cozy. Then up to prepare for dinner. The dining room was so lovely and elegant with candlelight and sparkling glass and silverware. The Meal did not disappoint it was well cooked and presented. The staff were pleasant. Breakfast the next morning was very good, cooked to order, and the fruit compotes and muesli beforehand were homemade and delicious. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. If you are looking for a modern hotel experience forget it and book into the Four Seasons next door. This is all about old world charm and experience of staying in an elegant country house.
I could stay here again and again. It is romantic, peaceful and with so much to do for such a small place. The food is beyond belief too!
Excellent for business and pleasure
When trying to organise a short business trip for myself and 5 colleagues the team at Ghan were excellent and nothing was a problem. Excellent food (a well priced tasting menu that was light and suited a midweek meal) and wine list was very good also. Meeting facilities are good. Good value for money all round
Perfect for a small business group
I brought a small group of colleagues from across Europe to Ghan House for a two day business meeting. During the planning stage most suggested we stay in Dublin, but I persisted as I wanted to give them a different view of Ireland. From an organisers point of view Paul and Sara could not have been more helpful and accommodating. When the guests arrived - individually during the first afternoon the annual Leprechaun hunt in Carlingford was in full swing (don't ask !!!). It was suggested they drop their bags and join the hunt. They knew immediately that they were somewhere different than the usual run of the mill business hotel in a big city. We used the hotel for meals, rooms and also for a meeting room. Everything worked well and our meeting was very efficient and relaxed. Reaction from all participants was extremely positive, with everyone enjoying the relaxed but very personal service. Lunches and breakfasts were fine, but the 'gala' evening meal was quite simply outstanding. The freshest local ingredients cooked to perfection, with excellent presentation. This is the third time in recent years that I have used Ghan House for such events, and I always know that we will be well taken care of. Well done Paul and Ghan House for being excellent ambassadors for Irish hospitality ~ Joe English, Louth County Enterprise Board
Many thanks again for looking after us so well during the past two days. Everyone was incredibly impressed with the hospitality, the excellent service and the quality of the food. The meeting room and facilities were also perfect as they were bright and airy, not too stuffy and with spectacular views ~ Gary O'Hagan, Managing Director, James Leckey Design Ltd
Holding our team meeting at Ghan House proved to be an inspired choice - its’ relaxed atmosphere, scenic location, superb cuisine and accommodation was a resounding success for us all. Rounding off the day sailing with East Coast Adventure was the icing on the cake – we’ll be back ~ David Duffy, Prospectus strategy consultants
Chris Heaney, Irish Times Restaurant review ~“The kitchen really shone, both of our dishes showed an admirable attention to detail”
John McKenna, 100 Best Places to Stay in Ireland, Bridgestone Guide~"Paul Carroll has made Ghan House into both the star of County Louth and the star of enigmatic little Carlingford. He has created a benchmark address that manages somehow , to keep getting better and better. Standards march ever upwards in Ghan House"
Room for Romance Guidebook ~“Foodies should make a beeline for Ghan House. Inspirational cooking has made it a hot ticket, and the setting – with views of Slieve Foy and the Mountains of Mourne – is the cream on the icing of the cake. Bedrooms with pastoral mountain and lough views are furnished with family antiques. While those in the main house score on charm, you may prefer those in the more spruce newer wing. Hospitable family owners the Carrolls encourage their guests to have a high time of it, but Ghan House is made for chilling, too. You’reclose to Carlingford’s medieval heritage and castle not to mention the Mourne Mountains. Golfing and and sea sports on the doorstep will soon be whipping up your appetite.”
Alastair Sawday’s Special Places to Stay in Ireland ~ "Enclosed within the ancient walls of Carlingford, probably the best-preserved medieval town in Ireland, the house looks over the pond and Carlingford Lough to the distant Mourne Mountains. There are arched doorways, mouldings….proper bathrooms - everything is impeccably done, everywhere you find thick wool carpets, family antiques, personal bits, a sense of deep comfort, plus books in the cosy little sitting room. The Carrolls know and enjoy what they are doing and are genuinely friendly with it. You won't be short of things to do, either. Restaurants, pubs, watersports, hill-walking or the simple pleasure of sitting by a turf fire."
Sally McKenna, 100 Best Places to Stay in Ireland Bridgestone Guide ~ "The welcoming nature, the generosity with time and effort, is why Ghan House is such an outstanding place to stay and eat. The narrative of Ghan House, the story of its hospitality, is based on making you feel welcome, and generously offering all the things you need. Without it, this would simply be a fine old house on the outskirts of a lovely village. But with it, Ghan is transformed, into something magical, welcoming, and generous."
Georgina Campbell’s Finest Places to Stay in Ireland ~ "Conveniently located just an hour from Dublin or Belfast, the Carroll family's 18th century house is attractively situated in its own walled grounds on the edge of Carlingford village, with views across the Lough to the Mountains of Mourne. A proper little bar offers a relaxing space where guests can mingle. It's very pleasant for residents to return to welcoming for non-residents just coming in for dinner. Dinner is, of course, a high priority at Ghan House. The style is contemporary, based on quality home-grown vegetables and herbs, home-made breads and ice creams and local produce, notably Cooley lamb and beef, dry cured bacon, free range eggs and Carlingford’s famous seafood. Oysters are synonymous with Carlingford as well as mussels from the Lough and lobster from Ballagan, while smoked salmon and crab come from nearby Annagassan."
